One of the first noticeable differences is the age requirement. Most states allow individuals without a high school diploma to take the test anytime after they turn sixteen. They also cannot currently be attending a high school. However, to attend an online high school and earn a diploma, there are no minimum age requirements. There also is no maximum age. To be eligible for a high school diploma, the only condition is that the coursework requirements set by the state are met. An accredited online high school will have its own requirements as well. Attending a specific number of classes with a satisfactory grade point average is often their primary stipulation before granting a diploma. If you are leaning towards a high school diploma rather than a GED, research the opportunities afforded by the state in which you reside. Most states will provide assistance to students up to three years after their eighteenth birthday, to complete their degree.

There are also states that have courses available to adult learners that result in a high school degree, rather than a GED. Another consideration is the amount of time required to complete the curriculum. A GED is achieved once a single exam has been successfully passed. A high school diploma, granted through an online high school, could take as many as four years to complete, although many finish in two to three. It requires a large commitment of time. Your choice may be guided by the requirements of your employer. Some want all employees to have a high school diploma while others accept a GED.
